January 23rd – Setley

So, Saturday the 23rd was the re-run of the January Championships after the previous weekend the wind failed to play ball.  Forecast looked good and Setley provided some challenging but fun conditions with a slight chill in the air.

With some big shifts and bands of breeze across the course made for some very close racing for the 16 competitors including Nigel Brown of Cat Sails.  The ever consistent Jon Harvey started off strong winning two of the first four races, with Liam Willis taking the win in race 2, and Simon ‘Cake’ McCarthy taking race 4 which then setting the president for the afternoon, counting two first and a second in the last three races.

Andy Hind seemed to be on a mission to make a part flyer work, several times pulling it off and leading a close knit bunch round the first mark.  New to the fleet Nigel Wallbank finished the day in 9th showing potential and pace mixing it with the leading bunch and one to watch.

This was enough for Cake to take the win, from Nigel Brown who took 2nd on count back from Jon Harvey.  4th and 5th were taken by Paul Davis and Max Crowe.

Next month’s championships will be the third weekend of February, 20th.  Venue and time to be confirmed closer to the time.  For those who fancy a change of scenery, Portsmouth have their championships at Canoe Lake the first Saturday of the month and  are always welcoming.

Until then, Setley Pond again this weekend, racing starting at 2, looks like breeze this time, so let’s make the most of it.

Regards
